Like meta-genome, meta-transcriptome, and even meta-proteome, is "meta-metabolome" ever going to be  a reality and if any updates on people exploring it ? Just thinking, if microbiomes can contribute to novel transcripts and chunks of DNA, then a La-Handlesman is waiting to 'happen' for meta-metabolome ? Thoughts are welcome.

There's a great paper from the Siuzdak lab comparing conventional and germ free mice. Convincingly they demonstrate some metabolites are generated from the gut microbiota.

I don't know of any resources specifically cataloging these host and bacteria metabolites, but the gut microbiota organ can not only contribute metabolites (e.g., p-cresol) but also modify host drugs or xenobiotics.
